What are the benefits?

Being regularly active is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Exercise can help to maintain energy balance by increasing the amount of energy you use, which is important when trying to maintain or lose weight.

Exercise not only helps to build strong bones and muscles, it has also been linked with improvements in overall health benefits, such as type 2 diabetes risk and high blood pressure, and studies have shown that it can help to boost mood.

How Much?

We should try to be active every day and over a week aim to achieve 2 1/2 hours of exercise (as recommended by the Government’s Chief Medical Officer) – the type that gets your heart rate going! This doesn’t have to be done all at once, instead you can split it up into 10 minute slots throughout the day.

To help get you started, we’ve listed some ideas to help build more activity into your daily routine without having to join the gym! Why not pledge to do one of them for a month and see the difference it makes:

  1. Aim to do a brisk 20min walk 3 times a week

  2. Try a new class with a friends e.g. pilates, dancing, yoga

  3. Get off the bus one stop before you need to and walk

  4. Walk up the stairs at work instead of taking the lift

  5. Get yourself a pedometer and try to walk at least 10,000 steps a day

  6. Do 30 minutes of hoovering once a week and burn 100 calories!

  7. Make your own pledge...

  8.
