Beef and Shiraz Casserole

Serves 4


- 400g lean diced beef - 2 whole onions diced - 2 large whole carrots – diced - 4 sticks celery- sliced - 2 tblsp Plain flour - 2 sprigs fresh sage – roughly chopped - 200g whole baby button mushrooms – washed - 300mls beef stock - 300mls red wine - We suggest M&S El Tesero Juramento Monastrell Shiraz 2010 - Pinch ground black pepper - 1 tbsp olive oil


  1. Pre-heat oven to gas 2 / 150c / 130c fan
  2. Heat a frying pan with the oil
  3. Fry the meat until brown
  4. Add onions and fry for 5 minutes or until soft
  5. Add flour and stir to coat the meat
  6. Add the carrots, celery, sage, mushrooms and seasoning and stir fry together for a few minutes being careful not to burn the flour
  7. Pour over the Shiraz and beef stock and stir well
  8. Pour into a casserole dish, cover and cook in the pre-heated oven for 1hour 50 minutes
  9. Rest for 5 minutes prior to cooking and serving on warm plates
